The current Statement of Community Involvement (SCI) [PDF, 1MB] was adopted in March 2024 and has been prepared by the Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Service on behalf of Cambridge City Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council. It sets out how we will involve communities on a wide range of planning matters throughout the planning process.
Planning affects the lives of everyone who lives, works, and visits Greater Cambridge. It is essential that people have an opportunity to engage in the decisions the councils make.
We want to actively engage with the community and have drawn up a consultation strategy for planning. This sets out how and when we will involve the community and key stakeholders in preparing our plans and guidance for future development in Greater Cambridge. It will also explain how we will involve the community in planning applications.
The best and most effective results happen when community engagement starts at an early stage. Early engagement means that you can have more input into how future growth and development will happen across Greater Cambridge.
Your local knowledge will help ensure that development in Greater Cambridge benefits the community as a whole, while protecting that which makes this area special.

From 31 October 2026, new national regulations will change how planning applications are decided by local authorities across England.
The Regulations do not allow councils to operate local arrangements that can automatically refer applications to Planning Committee that are required to be decided by planning officers. More information about how this works in practice is available on our webpage.
