Nigel first joined South Cambridgeshire District Council as a Technical Support Officer in August 1989, after graduating from Cambridgeshire Collage of Arts and Technology with a degree in music. It was meant to be a temporary job whilst pursuing a career in music but, Nigel's interest in planning grew and he decided to follow planning as a career.

Along side Nigel's role at South Cambs, for four years he attended a day release course at Sheffield Polytechnic and graduated with a Postgraduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Studies. At South Cambs progressed through a number of planning roles, firstly as an Appeals Assistant, then as a Planning Officer, Senior Planning Officer, Team Leader and for around five years as Development Control Manager.

In 2014, Nigel left South Cambs to experience planning in the private sector but returned to the public sector in 2016 as one of three Team Leaders for Cambridge City Council planning team. Since May 2018, Nigel has been working in his current role for the Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Service as the Delivery Manager.
